Dedicated to establishing Winnipeg, as the CITY OF PLAY!
Back in 1985, Canford built new outdoor rinks that facilitated both winter and summer sports, out of it's original Grassie and Lagimodiere site. Over 600 tons of sand was trucked onto two rinks for Canford's sand courts. The interest was overwhelming, attracting attention at the local, regional and national levels. CTV's LIVE IT UP featured the uniqueness of our sand courts inside outdoor hockey rinks, with their cameras catching both the very best players ( Garth Pischke in 2 men) as well as the casual recreational players in co-ed action. Winnipeg is well respected and renown for it's love of volleyball.
As in it's humble beginnings, Canford's primary objective is to encourage as much participation as possible, by all ages, in a relaxed setting, be it competitive or recreational play.

IMPORTANT:Respective of scoring system in the Sand Leagues. Teams that play at Canford are encouraged to maximize their playing time. Courts are usually open at least 30 minutes prior to the night's scheduled match times. Not only are teams asked to make use of adequate warm up periods...prior to their match...but also requested to play ALL 5 games in their Best of Five match! Not only does this afford a worthwhile outing, but as a meaningfull incentive (to play all 5 games), Canford awards 1 pt for each of the 5 games....plus 5 pts fro a match win! Thusly...a team being swept in the first three games...can still play for a point or two...in games 4 & 5! And in Canford, games are not up to 21 pts ...but 25...with game 5 up to 15! A team must win the game by at least two pts...
